Natutuwa ang young actor na si Joem Bascon na unti-unti ay nakakagawa na rin siya ng sarili niyang pangalan at marka sa showbiz. Nalagpasan na nga niya yung sinasabi noon na kamukha lang siya ni Piolo Pascual kaya hindi raw siya sisikat.

 

“Oo nga, e. Actually, noong una pinipilit nga naming ihiwalay at huwag akong maikumpara kay Piolo. Basta ako nagwo-work lang ako nang nagwo-work. Ang maganda is nakikilala naman ako for my work. Hindi ko na lang iniisip yung comparison. At least dumating naman yung time na nakagawa naman ako ng work kung saan nakilala ako as ako, as Joem Bascon,” saad ni Joem sa panayam sa kanya ng PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal).

 

Tama naman ang sinabi ni Joem, dahil napabilang na rin siya sa ilang malalaking pelikula at produksiyon gaya ng Batanes, kung saan nakapareha niya si Iza Calzado.

 

“So far, yung Batanes ang pinaka-okey na work na ginawa ko,” sabi ni Joem. “Malalim na acting din naman ang naipakita ko doon, e. I even won an award for Breakthrough Performance by an Actor sa Golden Screen Awards for my role there.”

 

May bagong pelikula ba siyang ginagawa ngayon?

 

“Ngayon ang naka-lineup sa akin yung Kalayaan na isu-shoot namin sa Spratley’s Island. Kasama ko dito yung bida sa Shutter, yung Thai actor. Ang role namin ay mga sundalo. Sana matuloy. Si Direk Adolf Alix ang magdidirek,” lahad niya.

 

Mabigat ba ang role niya rito na puwedeng manalo na naman siya ng acting award?

 

“Sana,” sambit ni Joem. “Hindi ko pa nababasa yung script. Pero alam ko naman si Direk Adolf laging gumagawa ng magagandang pelikula, indie film. Sana matuloy. Kasama nga rin pala ako sa Adela, na pinagbibidahan naman ni Ms. Anita Linda.”

 

LEADING-MAN STATUS. Pinapangarap rin ba niyang maabot yung leading man status ni Piolo Pascual?

 

“Actually, hindi ko naman iniisip na maging lead lagi. Basta ako, gusto ko lang mag-work. Gusto ko lang iba-iba yung ginagampanan kong characters. Hindi ko naman pinapangarap na sobrang sumikat basta magawa ko lang ng maayos yung akting ko. Okey na sa akin yun. I’m more doon sa longevity sa trabaho, e, kahit hindi ako lead, kukunin pa rin nila ako sa ibang roles dahil sa maganda kong ipinapakita sa trabaho,” pag-amin ni Joem.

 

Gaya ni Piolo, kapansin-pansin din na isa sa mga aktor na may magagandang katawan sa showbiz si Joem. Paano niya ba mine-maintain ang good figure niya?

 

“Medyo tumataba na nga, e. Pero kapag may time, boxing, yun ang ginagawa ko for maintainace lang.”

 

DATING BUT NO SERIOUS RELATIONSHIP YET. Kumusta naman ang love life niya?

 

“Date-date lang, pero wala akong karelasyon now,” sabi ni Joem.

 

Non-showbiz daw ang girls na idine-date niya. May advantage ba yung pagiging artista niya?

 

“Alam nila na artista ako. Pero siyempre, hindi naman yung tipong bukambibig ko na lang lagi yung pagiging artista ko. Ayoko naman yung tipong, ‘Hi… hello… ako si Joem. Artista ako, akin ka,’” biro ni Joem.

 

“Simple pa rin naman akong dumiskarte sa babae,” pahabol niya.

 

Ano ba yung qualities ng ideal girl niya?

 

“Hindi ako yung tumitingin sa physical, e. More on the brains and personality talaga. E, kapag nagsawa ka naman sa hitsura ng babae, siyempre hahanapin mo na yung ibang qualities niya na kumbaga pangmatagalan mong mamahalin sa isang karelasyon mo, di ba? Maganda yung nag-uusap kayo ng may sense, di ba?”

 

Halimbawa kamukha ni Betty La Fea, okey lang ba sa kanya?

 

“Kung sobrang talino naman at mabait, siguro wala naman magiging problema doon. Nagtataka nga yung mga handlers ko kasi ang taste ko raw sa babae yung simple lang. Hindi yung magandang-maganda. Okey na sa akin yung ganun.”

 

BETTY LA FEA. Speaking of I Love Betty La Fea, na pinagbibidahan nina Bea Alonzo at John Lloyd Cruz, kasama si Joem sa cast ng bagong ABS-CBN soap na ito. Ginagampanan niya ang role ni Mario, na best friend ni Armando, played by John Lloyd.

 

“Wala pa si Armando sa kumpanya [Eco Moda], nandun na si Mario, so nauna ako sa kanya. Ako yung naghikayat sa kanya na pumasok sa kumpanya ng daddy niya para doon siya maghanap ng adventure sa pambababae niya. Kasi pareho kaming babaero. Pero kapag nag-lie low na si Armando sa pambababae niya, ako ganun pa rin. Bad influence pa rin ako sa kanya. Ako yung nagbubuyo sa kanya, na kahit may Marcella [Megan Young] na siya, okey lang na mambabae siya,” kuwento ni Joem.

 

Bukod sa show sa ABS-CBN, may show rin si Joem sa TV5, ang Hush Hush.

 

“Medyo blessed lang. Siyempre happy ako sa mga trabahong dumadating sa akin,” pagtatapos ni Joem.

Joem Bascon’s career has progressed by leaps and bounds since being given the Breakthrough Performance by an Actor award at this year’s Golden Screen Awards for his realistic portrayal as Iza Calzado’s Ivatan husband, Rico, in the movie “Batanes”. Since then, he has been signed in by Folded & Hung as its newest celebrity endorser and he even had his own billboard along EDSA (which, unfortunately, had to be taken down) . That same billboard has elicited positive response from some people but has spawned outrage from some groups due to being deemed too “hot” for the location. However, Joem claims that there are reports of the controversial billboard’s return to the Makati skyline. I hope Folded & Hung people reconsider puting it back. That would translate to more sales for the clothing company as well as more projects for the young Joem.

At present, Joem appears in “Hush Hush”, a drama series about the lives of celebrities and showbiz personalities, aired over the newly revamped TV5 network. In the show, he plays the role of Andy a young man from the province who dreams of being a popular actor. And starting tomorrow, September 8, 2008, we will be seeing him in “I Love Betty La Fea”, the Philippine adaptation of the popular Colombian series “‘Yo soy Betty La Fea”, as Mario Collantes, the womanizing friend of Armando Solis (played by John Lloyd Cruz), Betty La Fea’s boss-turned-love interest. Joem explains that there would be no schedule conflicts for his two shows. His taping days for “Hush Hush” are on weekends, while his taping days for “I Love Betty La Fea” are on weekdays. Joem has also finished shooting for the film “Kalayaan”, a movie about the Spratly group of islands, where he is cast opposite Thai actor Ananda Everingham.

It seems like a really busy last quarter of 2008 for the goodlooking young actor.

Ang ganda na ng itinatakbo ng career ni Joem Bascon simula nang makitaan siya ng husay sa pag-arte sa pelikulang Batanes, kung saan siya nanalo ng Breakthrough Performance by an Actor sa Golden Screen Awards this year.

 

Nagsimula si Joem bilang isa sa mga bagong discovery sa show ng ABS-CBN na Let’s Go, na later on ay naging Gokada hanggang sa makansela na ito sa ere. Ngayon ay dalawa ang bagong TV shows ni Joem sa magkaibang channels: I Love Betty La Fea sa ABS-CBN at Hush Hush sa TV5.

           

Wala naman daw conflict sa taping schedules ng dalawang shows dahil weekends ang taping niya for Hush Hush at weekdays naman ang sa Betty La Fea. Natutuwa nga si Joem dahil magkaiba ang mga papel niya sa dalawang shows at nagagamit niya ang kanyang mga napag-aralan sa pag-arte nang tama.

     

Sa I Love Betty La Fea, gagamapanan niya ang role ng babaerong kaibigan ni Armando na si Macario. Sa Hush Hush naman ay gagampanan niya ang role ng isang probinsiyanong nangangarap na maging isang sikat na artista.

           

“Ngayon lang ako naging sobrang busy sa TV. Before kasi isa-isa lang ang TV show ko at pa-guest-guest lang. Pero ngayon, dala-dalawa na at magkakaiba pa ang tema ng mga shows.

           

“‘Tapos kapag nagsimula na ang reality-boxing show na Mano-Mano 2 ay baka sumali ulit ako. Nag-enjoy kasi ako sa pakikipag-compete sa boxing. Sana walang conflict kapag nagsimula na sila,” saad ni Joem.

 

Bukod sa mga nabanggit na shows, napapanood din si Joem sa dalawa pang ABS-CBN shows—ang afternoon soap na Ligaw Na Bulaklak at ang primetime series na My Girl.

           

Marami ring ginulat si Joem sa sobrang sexy na billboard niya for Folded & Hung sa EDSA. Siya raw mismo ang hindi makapaniwala na malakas ang naging impact ng billboard niyang ‘yon.

           

“Masyado nga raw mainit!” sabay tawa niya. “Noong una ngang itinayo ‘yon, marami ang nag-text sa akin. Ang lakas daw ng dating ng billboard. Pero ngayon, ibinaba na nila at pinalitan na. Ang nakakatawa, ang daming nagre-request na itayo nila ulit. Depende ‘yon sa Folded & Hung.”

           

Magtutuluy-tuloy ba siya sa pagpapa-sexy since nasimulan na niya ito sa ini-endorse niyang clothing wear?

           

“Depende naman sa project, e,” sagot ni Joem. “Kung magiging malaking tulong ito sa career ko, why not? Dapat ay may katuturan ang pagpapa-sexy ko at hindi yung basta ginawa ko lang. Kailangang buong pagtitiwala ko ay nasa ginagawa ko.”  

 

Huling napanood si Joem sa indie film na Adela. Baka may simulan daw siyang bagong indie film na may titulong Kalayaan na ididirek ni Adolf Alix Jr.

Look left and he looks like Sam Milby.  To the right and you’ll do a double take and think you’re seeing Piolo Pascual..  At his Edsa billboard for Folded and Hung’s Illegally Low jeans, I first thought it was Manny Pacquiao.  So will the real Joem Bascon please stand up?

Starting out in a TV station looking like the network’s biggest male star can work for you.  For Joem Bascon, it was a good starting point which led to roles in various shows.  After some time doing the regular cutesy boy-next-door roles, his handlers decided to make him go more offbeat and tackle more challenging roles.  The same chameleon-like quality that gave him all the comparisons to the above-mentioned actors may just be his competitive advantage.  He is working towards being shadow no more.

You may have seen Joem in films such as All About Love and Batanes with Iza Calzado.  Early on in his career, people were quick to tag him as “the next big thing.”  Soon, he’ll be working on Adolf Alix’s new film starring Lao-Australian Anada Cunningham (last seen in Shutter). 

His larger-than-life F&H billboard has been traffic-stopping, with his wet body in a blue haze complementing the rainy skies that seem to envelope Edsa as of late.  With this, the trendsetting jeans brand has catapulted a former look-alike into a new sex symbol.  In time, will the tables turn and the statement become, “Oh, there’s the guy who looks like Joem Bascon?”

Please cite a moment when people thought you were Piolo or Sam?

There were so many times in the past and even up to now when people thought I was Piolo or Sam, especially when I’m in ABS-CBN compound and pass through a crowd, people would say, Si Piolo ba yun? or Si Sam yun diba? I just give them a smile everytime I encounter that.

How do you feel when you’re compared to Piolo Pascual and Sam Milby because of your looks?

To be compared with Piolo and Sam is really flattering especially when I was just starting, but I want now to be known as myself, as Joem Bascon, to finally have my own identity.

What makes you different from them?

I think I’m 100-percent pure Pinoy, Piolo and Sam have both foreign blood, right? And I’m quite shy compared to them, heehhe.

I guess every person is really different from each other. I really don’t know what makes me different from them….I just know that I am who and what I am because of my family and the close people I have around me.

 When you first saw your Folded and Hung billboard, what was your reaction?

I cant believe it, it was an unexplainable feeling. I never thought I could have as huge a billboard as that of F&H in the middle of Guadalupe.

You shot the campaign in a bathhouse.  How was that?

I was very nervous at the start because it was dark in there and the place was huge and full of corners everywhere…In time, because the crew from the pictorial and the folded and hung people were so helpful and kind to me I felt comfortable after the first lay-out.

How do you keep in shape?

I go to the gym every week now because of busy schedules. I make it a point to work out or box whenever I can.  And of course I try to watch my diet and eat healthy foods.

Did you always dream of being an actor?

No, it was my dream to be a basketball player, a PBA player.

What has been the most challenging thing you’ve done so far?

The celebrity boxing competition was very challenging because I had to learn how to professionally box.

And also everytime I get a role to portray, be it on TV or movie, I take it as a most challenging thing for me.

And of course the photo shoot for the billboard of Folded and Hung because of the trust and the great opportunity that they put on me.

How far are you willing to go to make it in your career?

While I’m still young, I’m willing to try everything for as long as I know it won’t hurt anyone, especially my family.

Well, I am here now and I’ve been blessed with this opportunity.  Not everyone is given this blessing.  I am a disciplined person, so whenever I focus on something I make sure that I give my best always.

I want to go beyond: Someone known for having a pretty face or a great body…

I want to be known as a very good actor and a person who is dedicated to his work and who is dependable.

Someone who is really an ordinary person with an extraordinary blessing.

Style is being comfortable and confident in how you carry and project yourself.

For me, F&H stands for fabulous and hot and one of the best things that happened to me this year!
